January 2, 2009 is a non-working holiday

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared January 2 a non-working holiday, Malacañang has announced.

This means that workers will have a total of nine days vacation, including December 26, 29, and 31, as contained in Proclamation 1463, which the President has signed, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Wednesday.

The holidays will allow our countrymen “to have a more meaningful observance of Christmas and New Year; and to strengthen ties with one another,” according to the proclamation.

For regular holidays, an employee who reports for work will receive 200 percent of his basic wage for the first eight hours, with an additional 30 percent of his hourly rate for the succeeding hours counted as overtime, according to labor laws.

For the special non-working holidays, an employee can get 130 percent of his daily rate for the first eight hours with additional 30 percent of his hourly rate for overtime.
